Teenage Eye-Rolls and State Pooches

I recently moved half way across the country with my family, and three dogs, for a fresh start and a recommitment as a united family. I pictured a lifestyle of home cooked meals, game nights and true bonding time.  In the process of settling into becoming a Hoosier, I began a quest to gather interesting tidbits about our new state to spur conversation with my teenage, selective-conversationalist daughter.

Starting with the state flag, I moved on to lesser-known items like state flower, state bird, state tree, and even official state song.  I found fun factoids that were interesting to compare to our recently departed state of Connecticut. Surely they would entice my incalcitrant daughter to talk to me– right?  Well, although she met most of my “quite useful in a game of Trivial Pursuit” facts with a big eye-roll, along the way I also discovered all kinds of fascinating information on Indiana’s eclectic history. From Abraham Lincoln and David Letterman’s childhood, to America’s first long distance auto race (of course), Indiana is a treasure trove of Americana. However, one critical bit of information seemed to be missing….the state dog.

Spurred into an exhaustive search, I found no evidence of a state dog for Indiana. There were a few resources on the twelve states that have claimed certain breeds as their own, and we posted about each one on Facebook and Twitter. But, Indiana does not have a current incumbent.  I see this as an opportunity!

So far, the most striking element about Indiana has been the vastness of the land and sky.  Never-ending sunrises and sunsets, and displays of openness I’ve never experienced.  To appreciate the state’s beauty, I feel one needs amazing vision -the gifted ability to see in all directions, to appreciate the scale of the world around you.  For this reason, I nominate the Pug to be Indiana’s state dog.  Pugs have big, beautiful eyes that can see in many directions all at the same time, they are small so see the world as vast, and have a “take no prisoners” attitude, exuding the strength to see more than what is right in front of them. And, they are just so darn cute. What state wouldn’t want a pug to represent them?

What breed would you nominate for your state and why?

Puppy Potty Training…Ring, Ring!!

You are visiting your friend at her home, relaxing and enjoying a lively conversation, when you hear the lovely sound of bells ringing. Your friend jumps up and says, “That’s the dog.” What? Yes, your lucky friend’s pooch has been bell trained.

Bell training has been around for many years and is a proven method of dog potty training.  Pooches easily learn to ring a set of bells when they need to relieve themselves.  Bell training is a straightforward process, and is based on most other behavior modification methods. Each time your pooch rings the bells, s/he gets not only wild praise from you, but s/he also gets to go outside!

Puppies already going through housebreaking training take to bell training easily. As they are usually quite enthusiastic about anything their owners do, the excited response they get from their owners when the bells ring can be incentive enough to make them learn quickly. Consistency and positive reinforcement are key to dog training, and bell training is no different.

Another benefit to bell training is that friends and family members will also be able to understand the needs of your dog when they hear the bells. And don’t forget to bring your bells with you when you travel, making it easy for your pooch to avoid accidents in a strange place.

PoochieBells, the Original Dog Door Bell, is the product standard for the pet industry, and has taken the old idea of bells on a string and made a high-quality, stylish and effective potty training tool.  Many of their customers have asked if their older dogs can still easily learn to use PoochieBells, and the answer is a definite “Yes!”  “I introduced bell training to my Aussie-mix, Cody, when he was 7 years old,” says one long-time customer. ”It only took him three days to ring the bells with consistency and we have never looked back. He is now almost 11 years old and is still using his bells everyday.”

Bring bell training into your home, and next time you have a friend over for a visit, it can be YOUR pooch ringing the bells.

A New Look at Old Style

Several months ago I was out with my teenage son, accomplishing a laundry list of errands, when a boat-like station wagon with the classic wood-grained paneling stopped next to us at a light. While I was silently thanking my dear mother for selling ours a long time ago, my son was obviously appreciating the monstrosity.  He asked me if the wood paneling was styled specifically to provide camouflage while tooling around our tree-lined town. He proposed that perhaps this was a really cool style that should be re-introduced into our contemporary vehicle design. It’s that old adage, “What was old is new again.”

This story exemplifies why style is paramount at PoochiePets, particularly for our line of PoochieBells.  Our aim is to make not only a useful communication tool for pet and owner, but also a home décor item that is styled for the home, cute, expressive and fun.

We have no magic formula or oracle to predict the next home color or pattern trends, although we consider our team member, Sally Crowe, to be pretty darn close.  Styles are selected for their visual appeal and emotional connection (i.e. All American Dog, Good Dog, etc), and are updated several times throughout the year.  We keep an eye on what’s popular in home decorating, clothing, travel, and other aspects of our customers’ lifestyles.

For example, new for 2012, we are bringing in new line called Celebration, recognizing that our clients enjoy the novelty of changing up their PoochieBells to match their seasonal decorating. Rich fall colors and patterns, whimsical summer designs and many holiday options are examples of the expansive choices we will be offering throughout the year.

And, in recognition of what my son reminded me, we will also be looking to include those styles that were once popular.  Who knows?  Maybe a taste of “back in the day” will serve us all well today.

Problem Solvers

Life is challenging…that is for people, animals, plants, anything living. As Darwin’s Survival of the Fittest  theory rings true for us on a daily basis, we find pleasure in problem solvers. It’s not so much the people who solve problems, though they are fascinating too, rather the inventions that come out of their recognition of a problem. Inventions vary in scope of importance. It’s up to the individual to weigh the product’s impact on their life – love it! There is so much potential out there for making one’s life easier.

The can-opener…was the can first or the opener? The Snuggie, flashlights, shoe-laces, sun-screen, Chapstick, windshield wipers, indoor plumbing, ice-packs, seatbelts, snow shoes and, of course, we have to mention PoochieBells. All of these inventions were made by someone who wanted to solve a problem or to make his/her life a little simpler.

We at PoochiePets are proud of our invention, PoochieBells. A simple solution to a not-so simple problem:  dog has to go out but has no clear way to specifically let the owner know, other than a possibly mutually understood cue that is ripe for misinterpretation. So, along comes PoochieBells, a dog communication tool that also happens to be easily accessible, attractive in one’s home (solves the ugly dog product problem as well), and a breeze for the dog and master to implement. Isn’t invention wonderful?!

We are appreciative of and entertained by all kinds of “solutions” that surround us in our everyday world. They make our lives easier, and allow us to focus on the more complex areas of our lives: family, growth as individuals, friends, and of course finding another solution to share with the world.

Do you have a favorite everyday-life invention?  If so, we’d love to hear about it!
